As of October 2009, over 50 lawsuits had already been filed against the pahramceutical giant, Bayer. Bayer manufactures the birth control contraceptive, YAZ, as well as its predecessor, Yasmin. The Food & Drug Administration has recently noted that the two contraceptives have been linked to several harmful side effects including:

Heart attacks
Cardiac arrhythmias,
Blood clots
Deep vein thrombosis
Strokes
Gall bladder disease
Benign liver tumors
Death

The lawsuits allege that the manufacturers failed to:

Properly warn about the potential risks
Adequately test and research the drugs before releasing them into the marketplace
Remove the medication from the market once the adverse effects were apparent

YAZ and Yasmin contain a synthetic hormone called drospirenone, which has been shown to cause increased potassium levels. High potassium levels can lead to a condition called hyperkalimia, which disrupts heart rhythm and causes blood to travel throughout the body at a slower rate than normal. Reduced blood flow can result in blood clotting and when this clotting occurs near the heart or brain, there is an increased risk of cardiac arrest, stroke, and many of the other symptoms suffered by YAZ and Yasmine users.
